ABOUT CROSSING

GALLERY crossing opened in 2017 along the old Nakasendo Highway in Minokamo, Gifu. The highway flourished as a post town during the Edo period and served as an intersection for people and goods. By showcasing works of art from Japan and abroad, we aim to become a hub for cultural exchange within and beyond the region and a meeting point for imagination where people encounter new values. Our gallery focuses on contemporary artists who pose universal questions beyond the realm of contemporary art and craft.

Director Misa Kuromoto defines "circulation," "wind & soil," "humanity," "cultivation," and "voyage" as the five concepts that make up the gallery. In recent years, the gallery has paid particular attention to artists who possess insights into the relationship between nature and humans, sensibilities attuned to invisible existence and presence, and oriental aesthetics as outlined in Jun'ichiro Tanizaki's "In Praise of Shadows." Reflecting on works that pose universal questions that transcend time and space against the backdrop of individual roots, traditions, history, and culture will encourage individual growth and a broader understanding of our increasingly diverse world.
