Takayuki Watanabe

A ceramic artist who who believes that living itself is linked to “pottery” and expresses things that are not bound within the framework of potters in general. He lives in the mountains of Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, where he digs the soil, chops the wood, and fires his wood-fired kiln. The culture of pottery that he experienced while wandering around Asia when he was young, the time he spent training under Taizo Kuroda, the time he received high praise as a pottery artist; the expression of the earth at which he arrived after all of this is a model for the borrowing and shaping of the energies of wood and fire, born of his pure philosophy in which all things are born from, and eventually return to, the earth. As containers conceptually separated from function, the “Nohara” series of works, which used plants as their raw materials and were exhibited at GALLERY crossing in 2020, “Kakera” which was made by firing together collected blocks of soil, and “Kubomi” which copies the shapes of dents in the earth, have their essential aesthetic reflected through the artist’s experience with the earth, until now. His expression questions his idea of “pottery = living”, and is also an act akin to a lifelong experiment.
