Natsumi Kobayashi’s works demonstrate a return to the basic act of “seeing”. She uses landscapes such as distant coasts and adjacent grass and stones as motifs and creates abstract images of them in her mind. Then, she combines the abstract images of objects near and far, inside and outside, to illustrate not just “things” but the very act of “seeing things”. Her works are composed of simple lines and surfaces with subdued colors to create a tranquil image that naturally draws the viewer’s sight and highlights the strength encapsulated in the object’s essence, encouraging the viewer to engage in deep dialogue with the piece. Kobayashi’s creations embody her deep insight into “the act of seeing the world” and youthful excitement.

As I gaze upon forms emerging from within,
Symbols appear with a rhythm akin.
(The grass on distant shores and unnamed shells at my feet,
Echo an undulating tempo simple and sweet.)
