Yuko Ikeda 2018, Swell

Heading for the open sea you drift on the water, waiting for the waves. Sensing a large swell approaching, you start to paddle. You take-off and frolic, matching the speed of the waves. At times, you give in to the flow and the rhythm, conversing with the waves and yourself. Containing a similar rhythm like the sensation reminiscent of surfing on the waves, just like spinning a potter’s wheel, there’s a certain charm to these wares that bind together the gentle tolerance and carefree beauty, and at times the awe, the might, and the destructive power of nature itself. Heading towards the theme of the current exhibition, Swell, she says “I’m living each day with various swells that arise within me. I try and discern, albeit vaguely, whether I am being swayed by these swells, or am I trying to calm them down. However, I feel that inside of me I try and capture these feelings as I craft these objects.” You are certain to see the ocean through these wares, centered on strong Ōbachi bowls, made by Yuko Ikeda which are displayed at this exhibition. Wares that are gentle yet strong, just like the waves that brace the pleasant offshore, are surely worth wanting to see.
